Labels and compliance

Labels that follow the rules, built in.

US cosmetic labels have required lines and forbidden words. Our templates hold the first, and our check catches the second, before anything prints.

Short answer

Every TallowPal label template holds the lines US cosmetic labels need: the product name, net weight, the ingredient list, your "Distributed by" name and address, a way to reach you, and a lot code and best-by date. Before any label prints, we check it for drug claims, such as treating eczema or acne. As the company named on the label, your brand is the responsible person under MoCRA.

Anatomy of a label

What goes where, and why.

LineWhereWhat it says
Product identityFrontWhat the product is, such as "Whipped Tallow and Honey Balm". Your brand name sits above it.
Net weightFront, lower thirdThe amount, in ounces and grams. Small containers have relaxed placement rules.
IngredientsBack or sideEvery ingredient by its standard name, in order of amount. We fill this in from the formula and lock it.
Distributed byBack or sideYour business name and address, so the brand on the label is you.
ContactBack or sideA US address, phone or website where customers can report a problem.
Lot and best-byBack or basePrinted per order, so each unit traces to its batch.

Your artwork, colors and brand story fill everything else. Locked lines cannot be deleted, so a label cannot ship without them.

Drug claims we block

Words that change what a product is

A cosmetic cleans, moisturizes or beautifies. Promise to treat or cure a condition and the FDA considers it a drug, with different rules entirely.

  • Heals or treats eczema, psoriasis, rosacea or dermatitis
  • Cures or treats acne
  • Anti-inflammatory, antibacterial or antifungal
  • Relieves itching, rashes or diaper rash
  • Sun protection or SPF
  • Antiperspirant or stops sweat
Claims that fit

Say what it is and how it feels

  • Moisturizes and softens dry skin
  • Made with grass-fed, grass-finished tallow
  • Unscented, or scented with essential oils
  • Whipped with manuka honey
  • Deodorant that neutralizes odor
  • Made in small batches in Minneapolis
MoCRA, in plain words

Who is responsible for what.

The Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act made the company named on a cosmetic's label its "responsible person". On TallowPal, that is your brand.

The responsible person keeps records that each product is safe, reports serious adverse events to the FDA within 15 business days, and makes sure each product is listed with the FDA unless a small-business exemption applies. Many new brands with under $1 million in yearly US cosmetics sales qualify for that exemption, though it does not cover products used around the eyes, such as an eye balm.

This is general information, not legal advice. For your situation, ask a regulatory consultant or attorney.

Label and compliance questions

Do I need FDA approval to sell tallow skincare?

No. The FDA does not approve cosmetics before they are sold. Products must be safe, correctly labeled and free of drug claims.

Is tallow soap a cosmetic?

A true soap sold only as soap is regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, not the FDA. Add skin claims such as "moisturizing" and it becomes a cosmetic, with cosmetic labeling rules. Our soap labels carry the full cosmetic label lines either way.

Can I use my own label design?

Yes. Upload your artwork. We place the required lines in a locked zone and check the whole label before it prints.

Do I need product liability insurance?

We carry insurance for our manufacturing. Brands should carry their own: many marketplaces and stores require it, and Amazon requires $1 million in coverage for beauty sellers from November 2026.

What does "Made in USA" require?

An unqualified "Made in USA" claim means all or virtually all of the product is made in the US, ingredients and packaging included. "Made in Minneapolis, Minnesota" describes where we make it.
