How much to charge for tallow balm
Real retail ranges, your cost per jar, the fees each channel takes, and worked examples you can copy.
Quality tallow balm made with grass-fed tallow sells for about $30 to $50 a jar in the US, roughly $10 to $20 an ounce. Price from your cost per unit up: add payment and marketplace fees, shipping, and a marketing budget, and aim to keep at least half of the retail price after the product cost. For a 2 oz whipped tallow and honey balm that costs $12.25 with your label, $32 is a common starting retail price.
What tallow balm sells for
| Type | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Imported or bargain tallow balm | $6 to $12 a jar |
| Small-batch grass-fed tallow balm, 2 to 4 oz | $30 to $50 a jar |
| Tallow lip balm | $6 to $10 |
Ranges from US brand sites, marketplaces and wholesale listings in 2026. Buyers who pay $30 or more expect to know where the tallow comes from, how it was made and when. Transparency is part of what justifies the price.
Know your cost per jar
Your product cost is everything it takes to put one finished, labeled unit in a box.
- Making it yourself: tallow, honey and other ingredients, the jar and lid, the label, and your hours. Ingredients are often the smallest part; jars, labels and time add up fast.
- No-minimum private label: one price per unit with the label included. On TallowPal a 2 oz whipped tallow and honey balm is $12.25, a 1 oz balm from $9.00, a soap bar from $5.55 and a lip balm $3.75.
Shipping is separate. Most stores charge customers for shipping or build it into a free-shipping threshold.
The fees each channel takes
- Your own site: payment processing, usually around 3% of the order. Shopify and WooCommerce plans add a monthly cost.
- Etsy: a listing fee, a transaction fee on each sale, payment processing, and sometimes offsite ads fees. Together they often take 10% to 15% or more of the order.
- TikTok Shop: a referral fee on each sale, plus the affiliate commission you set for creators, often 10% to 20% on beauty.
- Wholesale to shops: the shop pays about half of your retail price, so your cost has to fit inside that.

Worked examples
A 2 oz whipped tallow and honey balm, product cost $12.25, sold at $32. Fees below are rounded examples, not quotes.
| Channel | Price | Product | Fees, about | Left before shipping and ads |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your own site | $32.00 | $12.25 | $1.25 | $18.50 |
| Etsy | $32.00 | $12.25 | $3.50 | $16.25 |
| TikTok Shop with a 15% creator | $32.00 | $12.25 | $7.50 | $12.25 |
The difference between channels is mostly marketing cost: on your own site you pay for traffic with ads, on TikTok you pay creators per sale.
Pricing moves that work
- Offer two sizes. A 1 oz at $18 to $22 lowers the first-purchase hurdle and sells to travelers and gift buyers.
- Bundle. Balm, soap and lip balm together raise the order value and share one shipping charge.
- Set a free-shipping threshold just above your most common basket.
- Do not race to the bottom. If a customer is comparing you to an $8 jar, they are not your customer.
- Price for wholesale later. If shops may stock you, your cost must fit inside half your retail price. At volume, buying stock from our sister company lowers it.
